If you own, rent or timeshare a modular vacation home, you probably already know that decorating these homes is just a bit different as compared to traditional homes. Certain features such as wall construction can be different from typical stud built walls. For example, you might find that the paneling was used for the walls instead of drywall. As a general rule, each paneled wall section is also trimmed with a batten strip. Fortunately, there are ways that you can make these slight differences work for you when decorating a modular vacation home. If you want to give your vacation home a fun and rustic look, why not decorate it with cabin decor? Here are a few cabin decorating tips you can try in your own vacation home.

Cabin Decorating Style

Of course, your modular vacation home won't have the traditional log and mortar walls that you'd find in a real log cabin. However, there are ways of using decor to transform your vacation home into cozy cabin living space. If the walls are paneled, this can often add to the rustic charm. If the floors are made from wood or simulated wood, warm up the space and add a bit of rustic appeal with braided or hand-woven rugs. Furniture pieces should have a rustic look. You can choose from pieces that are made from rough-hewn wood or even logs if desired. Cottage style, early American, Southwestern and Arts and Crafts are other styles that can work nicely in a log cabin styled home. Upholstered furniture pieces should look warm, comfortable and inviting. In fact, your entire decorating scheme should be focused on comfort.

Create a Cozy Living Space

Modular homes often have smaller rooms as compared to traditionally constructed homes. When using a cabin theme, these smaller rooms can work well to create a cozy cabin look and feel. Organization is the key to making small room designs work. Look for furniture pieces that offer hidden storage, and decorating accessories such as bins, baskets and boxes that look great and are useful at the same time.

Comfortable blanket throws and plenty of pillows can also add to the overall cabin feel of your modular home. When arranging furniture pieces, try to create conversation islands that look warm and inviting. Rustic decorating accessories made from traditional materials like pewter, wrought iron, pottery and hand-woven textiles will add an authentic cabin look. Rustic inspired artwork, such as a grizzly bear metal wall art or a mountain and sun metal wall decor can work as a focal point. You can also bring a bit of nature indoors by decorating with plants and freshly cut flowers.

When choosing a color palette, it's best to take your inspiration from nature. Warm shades of hunter green, deep red, brown, taupe and other natural shades can be combined to create a warm, comfortable cabin look and feel.

Window Treatments

Some modular homes have windows that are not the normal standard sizes. If you're sewing your own window treatments, just be sure to measure carefully. If you're buying your window treatments, you might have to hem or alter them slightly in order to create a good fit. Simple window treatments will work best with your cabin decor. Try using tab-top curtains or window toppers made from colorful striped, checked or plaid fabric. When using window toppers, it's a good idea to pair them with blinds or shades for those times when the sun is just a bit too bright.
