Using Paintings, Prints or Textiles

You can use either framed paintings or prints, or unframed painted canvas panels to create a very attractive headboard. Try using several unframed painted canvas panels, spaced to fit the width of the bed. Or select one wide print or painting and frame it to match the woodwork of the bed, hanging it on the wall behind the bed to create a headboard effect. Hanging a woven tapestry, a fabric wall hanging or handmade quilt on the wall behind the bed can also create a very attractive headboard look. In addition to being beautiful, fabric art has the advantage of being soft, which can be a good feature in a headboard.

Rounded or arc-shaped pieces of outdoor metal wall art can also create a unique look when hung behind the bed. Large decorative pieces of metal wall art, especially those with a freeform or abstract sort of design, can be used to create a contemporary headboard. Hanging a single large piece of wall art that includes a mirror behind the bed in place of a headboard creates a very unique look. Collage Art Headboards

You can either use an existing piece of collage artwork as a headboard or craft your own. Collages can be made from almost any type of material, which can add a very personalized look to the room. Try using items that either coordinate well with the room's overall decor, or create a very personalized look by making a photo collage. This can also be a great idea for making a headboard for a child's bedroom, as they can pick out photos that are especially meaningful to them and help make their own collage headboard. Other photo collage ideas include a theme, such as a sports team, flowers, or cartoon characters. Other types of items can also be used to create collages, such as fabric pieces, wooden pieces or blocks, covers from books, or anything else that you find to be artistic and appealing. Using one inch square tiles will allow you to create almost any type of pattern or design that you find appealing, or use tile sheets to get the job done quickly. Follow standard instructions for applying and grouting the tile, applying it directly to the wall behind the bed. You can complete the look by using finished wood molding around the edges of the tiled area like a frame.
